The Florida School of the Arts (FloArts) presents mixed media visual arts exhibit “Convergent Utility” by interdisciplinary artist Shannon Rae Lindsey. Free and open to the public, the exhibit opens with a reception on September 2 at 7:00 p.m. at FloArts’ Fine Arts Gallery located at the Palatka campus of St. Johns River State College (SJR State). Gallery hours are 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. “Convergent Utility” will be on display until October 7.

Made up of relief sculptures, two-dimensional mixed-media works and site-specific installation that responds to elements of the gallery space, “Convergent Utility” embodies notions of disorder through manmade construction materials that challenge their conventional context, setting and function. To inspire reflection on the role of perception when understanding utility and entropy, the materials reiterate a sense of irreversible change through physical manipulations and forms.

According to Lindsey, “I hope to inspire reflection on the role of perception when considering how we define utility and entropy. By exhibiting these materials outside of their traditional context, I encourage viewers to consider the definitions of useful, useless, ordered and disordered as elusive and subject to change through perception and comparison. These terms may never be entirely true nor entirely false; they exist somewhere between.”

As an interdisciplinary artist who explores drawing, painting, sculpture and installation with unconventional art materials and processes, Lindsey has participated in exhibitions throughout the Southeast. Lindsey received her Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art from the University of South Carolina and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of South Florida. She resides in Orlando, Florida and is a faculty member and the art gallery director at the University of Central Florida. To learn more about Lindsey’s work, visit www.shannonraelindsey.com.
