SJR State golf classic fundraiser benefits athletic programs
Sixty golfers recently participated in the St. Johns River State College Athletic Association 2021 Golf Classic that helps support recruiting efforts for the College’s three athletic programs - men’s baseball, women’s fastpitch softball and women’s volleyball. Held at the Palatka Municipal Golf Course, 15 teams of four were grateful for the opportunity to spend the morning golfing with family and friends amidst pleasant weather conditions.
SJR State Palatka campus Safety and Security Commander Brian Keith ended up on a team that would finish the tournament as the first-place net winners. “At the last minute, I was able to fill out a foursome in the SJR State Athletic Association Golf Classic,” said Keith. I hadn’t swung a club in two years and only played a couple of scrambles in the last five years. I had the best time, though. I got to play with friends I’ve known for years: John Raymond Theobold, Ron Dennis and my first boss, Sweet Owens.”
The leading tournament sponsors were Beck Automotive Group, Oliver Oaks & Vines, Georgia-Pacific, and Seminole Electric Cooperative, Inc.
The first-place gross winning team consisted of Joe Sanford, Jack Stumpfig, Jason Davis and Damien Ames.
The first-place net winning team consisted of Sweet Owens, Ron Dennis, John Theobold and Brian Keith.
Connor Guy won the putting contest and was awarded a Viking freezer sponsored Mckinnon Furniture.
Winning “closest to pin” were players Tom Tipton (#3), Tom Sykes (#6), Ed Crosby (#12), Joe Boatwright (#14) and Taylor Tipton (#16). Jack Stumpfig won the longest drive.
