Financial Aid
TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID
Needs-based Grants:
Federal Pell Grant Duration of Eligibility - Public Law 112-74 amended HEA section 401(c)(5) to reduce the duration of a student's eligibility to receive a Federal Pell Grant from 18 semesters (or its equivalent) to 12 semesters (or its equivalent). This provision applies to all Federal Pell Grant eligible students effective with the 2012-13 award year and beyond. The calculation of the duration of a student's eligibility will include all years of the student's receipt of Federal Pell Grant funding. This change in the duration of students' Federal Pell Grant eligibility is not limited only to students who received their first Federal Pell Grant on or after the 2008-2009 award year, as the HEA previously provided when the duration of eligibility was 18 semesters. This limit applies to all Pell recipients. For more information visit: www.studentaid.ed.gov/pell-limit.

Student and Parent Loans:
Federal Direct Subsidized Stafford Loan is available to help meet financial need after other resources are subtracted or to the annual maximum loan limit, whichever is lower. It is the U.S. Department of Education's major form of self-help aid and is available through the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program.
A Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan is not based on your financial need. It is available to you through the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program, if your estimated Cost of Attendance (COA) is greater than your financial aid and you have not reached your annual maximum loan limit through the Federal Direct Subsidized Loan. You are charged interest on this loan from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. If the interest is allowed to accumulate, the interest will be added to the principal amount of the loan and increase the amount to be repaid.
Borrowing Limits
Loan Proration
Federal Plus Loans for Parents can be used to reduce a family’s immediate out-of-pocket college costs to nearly zero. There is no dollar limit to these loans, with the loan amount being based on the remaining costs a student has after all other financial aid, also PLUS loans are not subsidized by the government, and are subject to higher interest rates than Stafford Loans. Further, repayment begins while a student is still enrolled in school.
Click on “My Portal Pal” and then search by alphabetical order. You can then locate your intended major and view the transfer specific courses.

Transfer specific courses / electives can also be found in the college catalogs and on the websites of the four-year institution that you plan to attend.
If you have accessed these resources, but still have difficulties, print out what you have found and meet with a counselor.
Private student or parent loans – also known as alternative loans – are offered by private lenders to provide funds to pay for educational expenses. They are not part of the federal student loan program and generally do not feature the flexible repayment terms or the borrower protections offered by federal student loans. Applicants are encouraged to download and complete the Private Education Loan Applicant Self-Certification Form and completing the information contained within it prior to applying for a private student or parent loan.
